Over the last several years, Automated Optical Inspection systems (AOI) have become more and more accepted as a necessary tool in PCB assembly lines.
It is not just the increasing board density and the miniaturization of components that drives this success. The implementation of AOI systems as part of the overall process control and test strategy has proven unmatched return on investment for inspection equipment regardless of the volume and the mix of product.

The most cited benefits are dramatic reductions in inspection and repair costs, significantly less downtime as well as the alleviation of traditional bottle-necks such as SMT placement equipment and electrical test. AOI is further improved when award-winning closed-loop-enabled ViTechnology® systems are used to prevent manufacturing defects before they occur.

Vectoral Imaging – basics of inspection technology
By analyzing the geometric information from the features and spatial relationships, Vectoral Imaging is able to precisely and repeatability determine the position of the component on the board, without regard for its rotation and size or the appearance of the component background variation.
The full line of ViTechnology® AOI systems comes equipped as standard with Vectoral Imaging technology. These entry-level to high-end in-line systems feature an extensive synthetic component library of Jedec and IPC Components that can be modified & added on site, or downloaded via the Internet for complete inspection of the full range of SMT components.

I-Lite Optimized Lighting
I-lite is the result of optical and mechanical modeling on a wide range of PCB finishes and components used by our global customers. This unprecedented study resulted in ViTechnology® designing an innovative acquisition system that combines multi-angle of incidence and multi-colour high reliability LED lighting with a high resolution camera and an optimum quality Telecentric lens.

A spectral analysis was performed to determine the optimized wavelengths of the LEDs to be used in SMT inspection. This resulted in a choice of Red, Green and Blue lighting selection to optimize inspection whilst also providing a colored image at the operator display.

The improvements on the image quality are clearly visible, and the benefit goes far beyond the human perception as I-lite dramatically reduces the defect false call rate increasing the AOI first Pass Yield (FPY).

Defect coverage, speed of image acquisition and ease-of-use have been significantly improved. In customer tests reductions of up to 55% have been achieved on already low false call figures. Enhanced lighting uniformity in the camera field of view, requiring less acquisition zones also reduces the number of library models and links used for inspection, resulting in a decrease in inspection time in customer test of up to 15%.

All these benefits have a direct impact on Return On Investment (ROI) of the AOI/AOM.

Upgradeability
The 5K/7K and 7K-DL Series innovative and modular concept allows companies requiring entry-level or mid-range AOI systems to adopt a solution that can be upgraded on site to meet both current and future requirements.
The 5K/7K and 7K-DL Series are equipped with the P series heads: PLUS, PERFORM or PREMIUM to offer greater versatility.

Accuracy & repeatability
In order to ensure accuracy, repeatability and short cycle time, this system has been designed using the high precision Vi-5000 technology, chosen by industry leaders for Zero Defect Line applications:

Applications
The 5K/7K and 7K-DL Series can be used from entry-level applications to the inspection of 01005 components, and high throughput Zero Defect Lines.
Inspection capabilities include presence, absence, polarity and placement accuracy, solder joint inspection as well as OCV and lifted lead inspection and sensitive solder joint inspection thanks to Profiler® .

Vi-2008 -The Newest Software Version

Vision 2008 Integrated Software Suite is a modular software platform that accommodates all AOI applications including: 2D postprint, mixed mode, pre-reflow, post-reflow, post-wave, backplane inspection, OCV. The suite also encompasses off-line programming capability, optimization tool, centralized database, review/repair station, data mining system…

Vision 2008 architecture is easily integrated with existing Quality Management Systems of shop-floor and easily networked to integrate several machines and several users. The modular nature of Vision 2008 allows the selection of specific tools for specific applications bringing greater versatility.

Vision 2008 includes the innovative LibraryPro engine to ensure the inspection process is reliable. Based on testing the performances of the inspection library on certified images, this unique solution provides reports on the capability to detect all types of defects with low level of false rejects. Accompanied with tools to manage and certify a full bank of images, LibraryPro also includes a Fine Tuning assistant that enables real time adjustment of the models to obtain 0 false accept and 0 false reject.

Vision 2008 focuses on the information displayed in front of the operator to secure the diagnostic of the defects. The Defect Viewer application proposes a redesigned Graphic User Interface with automatic zoom functions and configurable messages to warn the operator on certain conditions of defect.

Combining an intuitive GUI and the accurate localization of the defects on a colored image, the review or repair of the defects is getting secured and optimized with Defect Viewer.
